Department Description

The California Advanced & Exploratory Systems Department is focused on delivering weapon system studies and engineering development programs to support the transformation of the nuclear weapon stockpile. We are responsible for all aspects of system design, qualification, and analysis; customer interfaces; and the development of Sandia technologies within the nuclear weapons complex. Our department, a multidisciplinary organization composed primarily of staff working in mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering, is part of the California Systems Engineering Center and works closely with a variety of customers, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, the U.S. Strategic Command, the Navy, and the Air Force.

 

Job Description

Our department has an entry-level opening in advanced weapon systems design and development for a highly motivated, independent mechanical engineer. The successful candidate will be involved with system and component design and specification with a special focus on high-reliability, environmentally robust designs. A strong fundamental background in mechanical engineering and science, along with a broad general technical background, will help the candidate work in a multidisciplinary team; interact with component suppliers; and interface with advanced modeling, simulation, and scientific communities to develop weapon architectures, technologies, and demonstration projects.

Qualifications

This position requires an advanced degree (master’s or higher) with a strong academic performance in mechanical engineering.

 

Desired qualifications include an interest in a broad range of engineering disciplines as they relate to systems engineering.

 

Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
