: We are seeking an experienced Physicist to work as part of a multi\-disciplinary team designing and analyzing inertial confinement fusion \(ICF\) and high energy density \(HED\) experiments on the Z machine\. This person will employ high\-fidelity massively parallel radiation magneto\-hydrodynamic simulations, analytic models, and other theoretical and computational tools to investigate magnetically driven inertial confinement fusion and high energy density science and applications\. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Work independently as well as develop and direct multi\-disciplinary scientific research teams+ Identify key science issues that need to be better understood and explored for ICF and HED targets and influence programmatic directions+ Design and analyze experiments on Sandia's Z pulsed power facility+ Develop new design concepts to address emerging problems of interest+ Collaborate with experimental and diagnostic physicists and engineers not only at Sandia, but in the broader HED and ICF community as well+ Publish results in peer\-reviewed journals and present at appropriate scientific conferences Required: + PhD in physics or closely related engineering field+ 5 years of experience in the field of Inertial Confinement Fusion \(ICF\) and/or High Energy Density Physics \(HEDP\) research+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance Desired: + Technical competence in hydrodynamics and/or magnetohydrodynamics demonstrated through publications in refereed journals+ Experience in post\-processing data using Python, Matlab, Mathematica, IDL, VisIt, ParaView, EnSight, Yorick, or other platforms/scripting languages+ Ability to think innovatively, perform complex analytical analysis, and solve difficult problems+ Experience in experimental research and/or analyzing experimental data+ Broad background in physics or engineering that will allow participation in other aspects of multidisciplinary high energy density physics research+ Experience using massively parallel computing platforms+ Experience with or knowledge of electromagnetic particle or hybrid codes or analysis, structural codes or analysis, or radiation transport codes or analysis+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications, scientific reports, and project presentations+ The ability to be self\-motivated and to work as part of a diverse team, including project members from other NNSA labs Department Description: The ICF Target Design Department \(1684\) pursues theoretical and simulation based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion \(ICF\), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility \(NIF\)\. The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and radiation hydrodynamics experiments\. They rely on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools,with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas\. In carrying out their mission, department 1684 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory \(LLNL\), Los Alamos National Laboratory \(LANL\), and the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment \(AWE\)\.
