: We are seeking an R&D Staff Member with expertise in materials science and ion/electron microscopy to join our Materials Characterization & Performance Department\. In this role, you will have the opportunity to apply and develop electron\- and ion\-based microscopy methods to solve complex materials research and forensics analyses, while continuing to advance the forefront of materials science research\. In addition, you will support the training and development of the technologists operating these tools, and aid in the management and prioritization of related characterization requests\. Success in this role requires expertise in materials science or related fields of study, enthusiasm for materials science and materials characterization, and a desire and aptitude to advance the state\-of\-the\-art in materials characterization\. In addition, the staff member in this role should appreciate both fundamental and applied research, be comfortable pursuing research funding, and enjoy both leading research teams as well as serving on teams in a collaborative role where their expertise in materials characterization is critical to inform engineering decisions\. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Apply fundamental materials understanding of structure\-processing\-property relationships to solve materials forensics challenges and determine future research directions+ Design and interpret materials characterization analyses using scanning electron microscopy \(SEM\), focused ion beam \(FIB\), electron dispersive spectroscopy \(EDS\), wavelength dispersive spectroscopy \(WDS\), electron backscattered diffraction \(EBSD\), and transmission kikuchi diffraction \(TKD\)+ Identify research opportunities and pursue funding to support new R&D activities and/or the advancement of new materials characterization technologies+ Maintain and build scientific visibility through publication of research in peer\-reviewed journals, attendance and engagement at conferences, and presentation of scientific talks+ Maintain professional networks across academia and industry to stay abreast of cutting edge tools and capabilities and build partnerships for advancing those techniques further+ Inform engineering design, processing, and materials selection decisions through applied materials expertise and detailed analyses+ Manage and prioritize incoming characterization requests for our department's SEM, MicroProbe, and FIB technologists, while mentoring and deepening their technical expertise Required: + Ph\.D\. in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other related discipline+ Experience with materials characterization via electron and/or ion based methods+ Expertise in process\-structure\-property relationships in materials+ Experience publishing papers in peer reviewed journals, and presenting research at technical conferences+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance Desired: + Demonstrated ability to pursue and develop cutting edge characterization methodologies+ Leadership aptitude, including experience and fulfillment in developing others to become successful+ Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills+ Aptitude in communicating with a variety of personalities and communication styles+ Outstanding work ethic and self\-motivation+ Experience in and/or ability to organize tasks to enable work on multiple projects simultaneously+ Strong commitment to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork+ Experience in successful program development, including writing and submitting funding proposals and building effective customer relationships Department Description: The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials\.
